Rebellion brews over tax repayments

Full story: The Lebanon Daily News

A rumble of dissatisfaction, if not an outright revolt, is brewing among nine municipalities that were among those overpaid by the Lebanon County Earned Income Tax Bureau between 2004 and 2007.

"What did your municipality do with the (overpaid) money?"

It must be difficult to HOLD ON to and SAVE a surprise (and unearned) windfall.
It IS now quite difficult to repay it, obviously.
A "bank error in your favor" is quite correct.

Compliments to South Annville, Jackson, Palmyra, and Richland for not joining this action....
and planning appropriate future payments without legal attempts to avoid doing so.

The taxes where I live keep going up. Raise there taxes to pay back the money and charge interst on the principal its not the tax payers fold in the communities that were short changed why should they suffer with higher taxes ?

The real problem lies in the fact that the EIT is even still in existance.

Does anyone know how many of these municipalities still have the same accounting firm who failed to effectively audit the EIT and is now heading for court? Where does Heidelberg Twp and Myerstown Boro get all this money to pay legal fees? They are suing anyone they disagree with(and losing)! I thought MB was broke?

You would think that when the overpayments occurred someone somewhere somehow would have said, "Hey, something doesn't add up." But that would have been to easy. Just another example of the ineptness of our elected officials.

I have to agree with get real. How does ELCO not realize they are getting over a quarter of a million dollars more than previous years? Maybe whoever is in charge of their accounting department should be looking for a new job!

I think one of the original employees still has a job there. The whole lot of them should have been canned and quick!

Why not talk to the employees who worked there and ask them how the money got sent to the wrong places. I would like to know the processes involved. I don't trust what I read.

Dude, this story is almost two years old. Employees were interviewed by the FBI. Independent auditors were hired to determine errors. There are two civil lawsuits in progress against the bureau's former auditing firm and a bank involved when money was stolen.

All of this has been covered in the Daily News.

Oh that's right, you don't trust what you read. So how do you propose to find out?

Was EVERYONE interviewed by the FBI? This story also seems like the "what do I have on somebody to keep my ass out of trouble" scenario. This is a dirty story from day one. There have been no answers in this paper, only allegations. I have seen no PROOF OF ANYTHING. I hear words of people telling us what happened. Let's see some proof. Where is the money? How did he move those checks into another account without other employees knowing it? Or did they give them to him? and why? One would think employees processing tax returns would question things like this and notify someone. Shoddy work? Not saying they helped him steal it but someone was asleep in that office and since I don't know who did what....I don't want any of those people responsible for my tax dollars again.
