Police hope car parts lead to fatal hit-run driver

Authorities in suburban Detroit say they hope to use car parts to track down a driver who struck and killed a 60-year-old pedestrian, then took off. Police in Macomb County's Clinton Township say that Steve G. Smarsh was walking on Garfield Road about 2 a.m. Saturday when a white vehicle hit him.

EAA board to interview four chancellor candidates Monday

The interim chancellor of the Education Achievement Authority is one of four candidates who will be interviewed Monday for the permanent post leading Michigan's state-run district for failing schools. Veronica Conforme, who has led the district since former Chancellor John Covington abruptly resigned in June, will answer questions from the district's board and executive committee, along with three other candidates: Timothy Chargois, superintendent of the Beaumont Intermediate School District in Texas; Carlton Jenkins, superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools, and T.C. Wallace, former superintendent of the Mount Clemens and Lansing school districts.
