Disidore approved for court services post
Northampton County Council has approved the nomination of a Lower Mount Bethel Township man as the county's new court services director.
Archie Disidore III, 46, of Upper Little Creek Road, will succeed William Hillanbrand, who left the job earlier this year for a post in the county's expanded emergency management division. Hillanbrand was a former deputy sheriff before being tapped to succeed former County Councilwoman Mary Ensslin in fall 2006.
County Executive John Stoffa pulled the Disidore nomination from the council agenda at the last minute during the June 19 council meeting, uncertain whether he had enough support. He later resubmitted it.

State to probe county GOP in '07 election
The state attorney general's office has agreed to probe questions from Northampton County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Long on ''potential election violations'' last year by some Republican candidates.
County District Attorney John Morganelli was asked by Long in mid-May to begin an investigation, but Morganelli forwarded the request to the state because of conflicts. The state agreed to take the case about two weeks ago.
It would be the second election law case recently taken by the state involving county politics.

Power line may fell huge trees
Towering trees in a miles-long stretch of forest at the base of Blue Mountain in Northampton County might be cut down soon to make way for a power line, local officials say.
PPL Electric Utilities is also considering other routes for the line, and company officials stress that short-growing trees and other plants wouldn't have to be cut down for a new 500-kilovolt line.
But that hasn't reassured all officials and residents in Moore Township, where the power line would affect more than 145 acres. Most of that land is forested and runs parallel to the Appalachian Trail, and PPL's proposal would also require spreading herbicides near the headwaters of the Hokendauqua, Monocacy and Bushkill creeks.
