Mora County is best known for being poor - poorest in the state and often among the poorest in the nation.

Last month, Mora County, N.M., became the first in the nation to vote for permanent poverty.

Situation: Crews from New Mexico State Forestry including one of the Division's new Veteran's Firefighter Crews as well as an crew from the Division's Inmate Work Camp are responding to a 6-10 acre fire in the rea of Ledoux, NM, SW of Mora in Mora County.

The state auditor says Roger Gonzales misspent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars meant for the classroom at Mora schools, an allegation that led the state to strip him of his school business license and the district to let him go.
