Dr. Frank Torti, the dean of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, told the soon-to-be graduates of UConn's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on Sunday that when he was a lad of 9, his class took a field trip to the research labs of Thomas Alva Edison.

The words 'scientist' and 'entrepreneur' may not evoke the same mental image, but in the case of Mark Smith, they are a perfect fit.
