Local governments try a new kind of bidding
When Perkasie started replacing its Christmas decorations, borough officials were left with a puzzling question: what to do with the old castoffs?
Borough Manager Dan Olpere said he just want to pay to have them thrown away. But 40 sets of used decorations are hardly the stuff of consumer excitement, he said.
As an experiment, Perkasie advertised the items on an eBay-like Web site specializing in online municipal auctions.
The result was a $100 bid from the tiny borough of Elkland, Tioga County.

Budget apparently restores burn unit funding
A compromise state budget apparently rescues $5 million in state funding for six hospital burn centers across Pennsylvania, including the regional burn center at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
The money, left out of the $28.3 billion budget Gov. Ed Rendell proposed in February, was reinserted during weekend negotiations between his administration and legislative leaders.
According to House Republicans, the burn center money was a third of the $15 million restored for hospitals in the Department of Public Welfare's budget.

Vision of Easton-NYC train service discussed
State and local officials from Pennsylvania and New Jersey met at Lafayette College on Thursday to discuss the possibility of providing train service from Easton to New York City.
Officials who attended the meeting were quick to describe the plans as ''preliminary'' and ''informal.'' But they said such train service is much more plausible today thanks to high gas prices driving up demand for public transportation, along with New Jersey Transit's plans to build a new tunnel into Manhattan that would double the number of trains going in and out of the city.
