Very disappointing that coach. He has had time to improve the games. All that money on a new field and they can't even win the game. SAD!!!!!!!!!!

As a former Oliler of many years ago - 30 to be exact, I don't see team unity, the team appears to be in shambles. All these kids must become "one unit" and work together as a team. It's all coaching, I recommend a book to the coach and to the players, it's called: "all you can do is all you can do, but all you can do is enough" by Art Williams. I believe that HEART, BELIEF, FIGHT, UNITY and PRIDE are the key components in a winninng football team.

Our motto back in 1978 was "it's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, it's the size of the FIGHT in the dog" do these coaches not believe this? or have they just failed to communicate this to the players? Or have the coaches just given up? or is losing now part the normal in the Oiler system?

My kid went to Bishop amat 10 years ago and after his freshman year he wasn't happy with all the politics there and he wanted to go to MHS and practiced ONE DAY with the team and he refused to go back, he said the players were running the show, they would refuse to sprint, they would talk back to the coaches, and there was 2 black kids on the team and the other players would refer to them as n------, I enrolled my son immediately at another school. Back in the days, we would have NONE of that.

back in the old days when the team was run by the best coaches in the world. none of the above would of ever happened. they need to get a new coach. perhaps a new school board.

UCLA ROB you are just talking out of your ass , I was on that MHS J.V. team your son tried out for. He was a hack who though that just by transferring from Bishop he was going to be treated like a god.He even had the audacity to show with his Bishop workout gear ( you couldnt spring for new gear?)He was tall and slender, I believe he tried out for tight end and linebacker ,he didnt impress anybody.

As far as players running the show , you have clue about what your talking about.Trust me up downs and bear crawls around the field prevented everyone from trying to steal the coaches thunder.

Ten years ago the Oiler program was not what you imply it degernerated to. Up to 2002 , the program had fine coaches on the varsity levels who earned all the players respect. This period was very fruitful for the program, although no cif titles were won , competitive teams with heart and tencity were fielded , totally unlike what is going on today.

So BOB, by ur mere name it sounds like you are a educated man , so please dont speak out of your ass before you have a clue.

You Little boys should of been around in the 1950's when MHS had the great coaches and the great teams. The boys were in it to win not to be the big shots.

Aren't the kids at Montebello a little small to be competing with the upper echelon of teams?

During the game it looked to me like they were all 5'6" and Rowland actually had lineman sized guys and a QB who could see over the line.

Not much speed either for MB...

I respect your opinion, however your comment about my son being a "hack" I find it insulting and judgmental on your part, considering he was there only one day. He actually ended up being an All-League selection 2 years at a superior league 2nd team as a Jr. and 1st team as a senior both years as a Linebacker. I live in Chino Hills now so I don't make it to the games very often but I did check out one of the practices this past week and I simply stated what I saw in that practice - small team, a couple of good athletes but too many heads looking down, they need to believe in themselves alot more and need to create team unity, and not be easily intimidated by the other team just because they're bigger, they need more fight in them.

Back in those days the players didn't have the training facilities, coaches camps, etc, etc, like the players of today have. With the coaches MHS had in the 50's 60's and '70s I don't believe too many players of "today" would even be able to hang. Yes the athletes are superior today for the reasons I pointed out, but if the players in those decades had what today's players do, MHS would have a team equivalent to maybe ... St. Paul today.

Consider this, in the early '70s Mike Smith was the starting center for USC while the starting Nose guard for UCLA was Mike Martinez, they were both team mates at MHS not to mention Mark Smith (Mike's brother) that also played tacke at UCLA and Ron Lou he was a Center at MHS and became an All-American Center at Arizon State and played in the NFL for 12 years. So please stop with the insults and quit talking out of your arse.

Note: the record holder of the 100 yard dash at MHS set by Bob Bagwell in 1957 is STILL the record today, no fancy facilities, no fancy shoes, no performance enhancing products were available in those days. In other words, pure huevos my friend.

As for your "leather helmet" remark, I would love to see how many of todays's players would even dare to play football with a leather helmet, my guess is, very few. The players of yesteryear had balls, something so many lack today.

You hit the nail on the head.. Those were the best. They all could not hold a candle to them. Make note of Gary Bagwell Bob's brother a great football player. Both him and Bob in the Athletic Hall of Fame today at MHS!!!!!!!!!!

Not only in football did MHS experience success, but also in Basketball, Jerry Pimm graduated from MHS in the 50's and in Baseball Tim Johnson and Bob Sheldon were SS and 2B for the Brewers for about 10 years in the late '60s and '70s.

That work ethic that Kobayashi instilled in his players carried over from decade to decade. I can remember as a kid, going to the school to check out the practices and I remember those players, staying after practice with NO COACHES around, and running bleachers and challenging each other till it was dark. I couldn't wait to be old enough to be an Oiler, it meant pride to me.

I know I'm generalizing, but todays work ethic in most high schools is extremly poor. I remember when I played, it was mandatory for us to show up in the weight room at 6:30 in the morning for weight training and if you didn't show up on time ... you would pay for it dearly after practice. Oh, and back in the days we had only ONE WATER BREAK per practice and we had only 3 minutes before it was over, now they even have gatorade on the sidelines for whenever they wish to take a breaks. In toughness, todays players couldn't hold a candle to us "old-timers" in no way shape or form.

Do you know what the definitions of insanity is? it's doing the same thing over and over everyday and expect different results. It's all coaching, MHS needs to put priority to it's football program. where is Coach Doug Rhin? where is Coach Drulias? Why aren't they trying to bring these guys back?

UCLA ROB,
Most of the names you mention have been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame celebrated at the annual Stu Pike/Tak Kobayashi Memorial Golf Tourn. held every year in June. Drulias is now the Golf Coach. Great guy and really is a good coach. He is one of the chairman of the golf tourn. They just held it on June 19th 10th one. They hold a great tournament every year and outstanding banquet. The proceeds go to the athletic programs and the balance is given in scholarships. It is co-sponsored by the MHS Alumni Assoc.

Nice, maybe you can post some info in the future when there's an event like that, I'm sure other alumni would like to participate.
