Glen Ridge's former registrar sentenced for theft

Tresor Gopaul, former Glen Ridge borough registrar and a Montclair resident, was sentenced to five years in prison for theft on Monday. Tresor Gopaul, 30, of Montclair pleaded guilty earlier this year to stealing nearly $83,000 in cash revenues received for birth, death and marriage certificates, during the three years he served as Glen Ridge's registrar.

Also referred to as "payments in lieu of taxes" or tax abatements, PILOT agreements are exemptions that municipalities grant to businesses and developers, which enable them to switch from their standard tax payments for a property to a fixed, yearly payment to the municipality. 'Ridgewood Cares About Schools' to Hold Panel Oct. 2
