Board of Ed met Monday on bond, appointments, field trips

The Shelter Island Board of Education had travelling on its mind Monday night - as in presentations for student field trips to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Manhattan and Block Island. The presentations were made after Superintendent Leonard Skuggevik made a final wrap-up on the state of the school's heating and cooling systems, as well as the overall state of the infrastructure of the school.

First Great Peconic Race puts on a first rate show

All eyes in the crowd on Wades Beach just after noon Sunday were looking south at a distant figure clearing Wards Point. "There he is," someone shouted, pointing at Taylor Resnick on his stand up paddleboard, digging into Shelter Island Sound in the same rhythmic motion and pace as when he left going in the opposite direction a little over three hours before.

Food Forward: Portlandia-Meets-Good Eats Series Premiering Sunday on PBS

Earlier this week, I attended the New York premiere of "Food Forward", a 13-episode, half-hour PBS series debuting this month. Born out of a 2007 Buenos Airespoker game, the series features "food rebels" in move than 50 communities across the country.Producer and director Greg Roden said the goal was to "pick up the conversation where "Food Inc" and "Fast Food Nation" left off" andcreate something that was missing from the Food Network and Discovery channels.

Mental Health On Agenda

Starting this month, South Fork students will have access to a greater array of mental health offerings than ever before. Besides an initiative to fund the hiring of a full-time social worker and an as-needed child and adolescent psychiatrist, earlier this summer, East Hampton High School received a large, anonymous donation that will help pay for psychiatric evaluations and counseling services.

Septic Repairs and Neighborhood Systems Proposed

A draft comprehensive wastewater management plan for East Hampton Town, developed by a consultant who has analyzed the waste treatment and water quality issues throughout the town from an environmental and economic standpoint, will be the subject of upcoming discussions by the town board and of several hearings at which the public may comment. Pio Lombardo of Lombardo Associates, a Massachusetts environmental engineering and consulting firm, delivered an executive summary of the draft plan earlier this week.

Man Chooses to Go to Jail

East Hampton Town police picked up a taxi driver in Shirley early last Thursday and gave him a ride to Wainscott police headquarters, from which he ultimately was sent to county jail. The police made the trip after learning that Mr. Williams had been arrested by Suffolk County police on an unrelated charge last week.

Showtime Green-Lighted for Next Shoot

A location manager for the Showtime TV program, "The Affair," which is set in these parts and is completing the filming of episodes for its first season, got a decidedly better reception this week than the last time he spoke to the East Hampton Town Board seeking a permit for a film shoot during the height of the season. Andrew Poppoon reviewed plans for filming in Amagansett and Montauk on Monday through Friday at a town board meeting on Tuesday, and board members agreed to issue a film permit.

Citizens Advisory Committee Looks Ahead

A show of hands at a Montauk Citizens Advisory Committee meeting Monday indicated support for a detailed environmental analysis of a proposed redevelopment of the former East Deck Motel at Ditch Plain. For over two hours on Monday, the Montauk Citizens Advisory Committee and a slew of other residents went over the problems that have dominated conversation here this summer, mentioning the "horror" of taxicabs and the need for code enforcement.

East Deck Plans to Get First Look

What is now an open driveway behind the former East Deck Motel in Ditch Plain is to be transformed into a sloping, below-grade parking area, leading to loading docks beneath a new, two-story building behind the existing structures. The first step in what is expected to be a long process of site plan review of a controversial plan to convert the old East Deck Motel at Ditch Plain, Montauk, into a private club is scheduled to begin before the town planning board at East Hampton Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Taser Used to Subdue Man

A 19-year-old Springs resident whom an East Hampton Town police officer subdued with a Taser early Monday morning, is facing multiple charges, including the felony assault of a police officer. The officer, Sarah Mortenson, was hospitalized as a result of the incident.
