A case that surprised many with allegations of espionage and even talk of the death penalty ended Friday with an 85-year-old New Jersey man hobbling out of the federal district courthouse in Manhattan, avoiding prison but fined $50,000. Ben-Ami Kadish must pay a $50,000 fine within 60 days.

A New York City judge has spared an 85-year-old former U.S. Army engineer any prison time but fined him $50,000 for passing classified documents to the Israelis in the 1970s and '80s. Federal Judge William Pauley told Ben-ami Kadish he had committed a grave offense but noted the government had dramatically reduced the charge against him.
