During the Reagan years we had a Republican County Commission with 2, yes TWO commissioners from this end of the county; Richard Stone of Marshville and Bill Davis of New Salem! Both of them promised to represent this end of the county well and at first they did, Bill Davis especially well. In the next election Davis was defeated but Stone campaigned hard in the western section of the county and was re-elected becoming chairman by virtue of his ties to western builders and developers. Even though he lived on this end of the county he recognized to be electable he had to court the vote in the western end of the county where the big Republican majority is.

Every election since then has become more and more western centered. Now the board is made up of people who were not born here, were not raised here and know nothing about the history and culture of this area. They shop in Matthews and Charlotte. They don't know the names of the towns in eastern Union County and have never been in them. They want their garbage and sewer to go away from their fancy houses and ritzy neighborhoods. If you ask them where the sewer goes they point east---where we live!

These new commissioners are only looking out for their multi-million dollar neighborhoods in the western part of the county.

They don't really know what lies east of Potter Road. To them we are country people---and they aren't country! To them we are just native rednecks---and they are urbanites! To them we don't exist and therefore we are not represented on the County Commission.

If I were a revolutionary I would plug up the sewer pipes coming east from Western Union County. I would block garbage trucks from coming east from Western Union County.

That would get their attention!

I have been in favor of the Marshville and Wingate areas seceding from Union County and joining Anson County for years. We will always get the short end of the stick when it comes to the amenities that Western Union County takes for granted. All we get is stuck with part of the bill.

If we secede we should join Stanley County not Anson. Anson County has no growth. It's economy is stagnant. County services are slow to respond and poor quality. The schools are weak academically and generally under staffed. The health department in Anson County is flooded with STD cases including AIDS.

Why do you think the people in the west work so hard aginst districts? Lose of power. It seems that people on the westside think that us on the east are not smart enough to make decissions that affect them. Guess they made ALL the right decissions up north, really. Now it's time to come here and screw things up! I'm telling you, it's like Canadian geese. Fly down here and $hit on everything.

I am so sick of people talking about people coming down here. This is a state of the united states. They have a choice to live were ever they want. What makes this your state ?

The US population has become almost nomadic as people move from one area to another and from job to job. Some companies move their middle and upper management frequently not allowing them to establish themselves before again sending them to another location. People build a fine house in a desirable area with the idea of living in it a short time and selling it for a profit before moving yet again and starting over.This is transient population not native population.
People who are native to an area and can trace their ancestry back several generations in the same area are becoming increasingly rare.
NC is my home state, Marshville is my hometown. I was born in Union County. I can trace my father's family back 6 generations and they all lived in this area. I can trace my mother's family back to when they settled in Mecklenburg County NC just before the American Revolution. Many members of our family have left the area to go to school, to fight in this country's wars and for jobs but they almost all returned. This was their home. My relatives and ancestors are buried in the church cemeteries of Union, Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties. This is my region, this is my state. I am a native.
The people who move here have no concept or knowledge of the culture and history of this area. This is only a place to live to them. They are transient population. They have no love and little or no attachment to this area or this state.
My relatives will be here when the transient nomads' bones turn to dust and are long forgotten. They are not North Carolineans, They are not Union Countians. They are transients. They are temporary residents.

Family is not really important to the folks from up north who move here. They think it's odd that someone would study or know their family heritage.
We have a nice couple from NJ that have been attending our church. In casual conversation I asked about the gentleman's family. He said he had 2 brothers but he hadn't spoken to them in 20 years and didn't even know if they were still alive.

I agree with Trull Nance Carpenter. I can tell you about stuff in my family back to the Civil War (or war of northern aggression as I like to call it).

I am not sure exactly why people here think I am a yankee. My family fought in the Revolutionary war and lived in Anson county. They were given a farm in western Anson county for that service near what is now Shiloh National Battleground in Tennessee.

One of my neighbors moved here to escape the cold, snow and high cost of living in New York. He has a long, difficult to spell and pronounce family name that he says is Polish. He's a nice guy and plays a good game of golf.

He is a very articulate and sophisticated Yankee. I guess you could say he is a polished Pole but I wouldn't.

His wife is one of those high maintenance, big hair, highly decorated, heavily made up, loud talking, easily upset, moaning and bytchin' types. She is always trying to find ways to make those people around her, including her family, feel insignificant and ignored. She doesn't cook, work or clean house. She spends her days either watching TV and getting plastered or shopping. Her husband, to his credit, has tried twice to ship her back up north where she insists she was always happy.

I cant believe what I am seeing here. I know people from the north that take their family history serious.

I wonder how far back you have to go till you find out that your forfathers are from somewhere else as well.

Maybe we should call this state little russia. You know that other Country where you cant cross borders.

People are different no matter where you go. Should we close the borders to our country as well.

I believe that this is a free country or atleast it used to be. Our freedoms are being slowly taken away from us. But that is an entire different issue.

Have you lived in the same house since you were born. What would you say if you moved and weren't welcome by your new neighbors. You might say what did I ever do to them. Why are they like that.

My family is from the north. Both of my parents were born in New England and nearly my entire, large family still lives there today. I was also born in New England, but I moved to Charlotte, then eventually to Union County when I was very young. I grew up here. I spent my entire childhood as a member of the culture and community created by Union County, and I quite enjoyed it. The only thing that I dislike so deeply is the hostility southerners direct towards northerners, and the bigotry so trademark to the region and its people!

My family history is quite important to me. I celebrate my close heritage everyday of my life, and I know exactly when my family moved to America, and have even traced my family throughout their native countries as well.

Being a product of a family of recent immigrants and moving from the North to the South don't make me any less of a Union Countian. That is and forever will be the home of my childhood. The war ended in 1865. Let it go.

As for the REAL topic at hand, the GOP - well, as a moderate individual that leans towards the left, I don't find this very appealing. Conservativism has its place in society. But replacing progressivism with conservativism would have stunted the growth of our great nation, INCLUDING North Carolina, many years ago. People forget that.

Changing names does not change the essense of the cultures spawned by the groups. Have you read/seen tv coverage or listened to the Easley hearings? If thats "progressive", I'll have none of it, thank you!

Personally I'm drawn to the more conservative viewpoint. I'm not as concerned over democrat or republican as I am who is conservative.

I've always held conservative values in high regard, especially with regard to society's moral conduct. A true conservative desires to preserve traditionalism and restore the same values that our forefathers deemed important to our government and daily conduct as expressed in the US constitution. Regardless of what the liberal media and leftist judges have said our government was designed and written by Christians and our laws are greatly influenced by Judo-Christian values. The corruption of the US constitution by the "interpretation" of leftist judges should be an alarm to every freedom loving American. Our forefathers died defending that piece of paper from Socialism, Fascism, Communism and terrorists. I think they would be appalled at how stretched and disfigured our government has become.

I am also a fiscal conservative because I think we need to limit government spending and conserve by balancing the national budget and reducing the national debt. For that reason the wild spending of liberal Democrats like Obama who seems to be giving away more than we take in scares the living daylights out of me.
