Southern Mecklenburg is full of 'hot spots' that Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified where concentrated crime is drawing notice.
The spots are often where cars are parked -- at hotels, apartments, fitness centers and parks.
Police report problems of car break-ins targeting GPS systems, laptops, bags and other items at areas around the region. Spots include parking areas at Ballantyne Village and its nearby condos; hotel lots in the Ballantyne, Piper Glen and SouthPark areas; and parking at Independence Shopping Center at Independence and Idlewild roads and at nearby apartment complexes, CMPD officials say. Newcomer Network: Highland Games a stone's throw away

The fourth annual Mint Hill Highland Games will be Friday and Saturday, at Mint Hill Park on Fairview Road (Exit 44 on Interstate 485).
Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday night with a free concert featuring Silver Spire and Ed Miller at 7 p.m. The bands Mother Grove and Rathkeltair will continue the concert after an 8 p.m. torchlight ceremony and 'calling of the clans.'

Billed as a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools meeting right in the town's backyard, up to 150 parents, leaders and school district officials talked buses, books, buildings and more at a town forum this week.
'It's only taken us about 20 years to get to this point,' said Matthews Mayor Lee Myers about Monday's gathering -- an outcome of CMS's new decentralized system.
