Middlefield Outbid For Ski Area; Deal Still Possible
The town lost in the bidding to acquire the former Powder Ridge ski area Saturday, but all may not be lost.
The high bidder in the foreclosure auction was Middlefield Holding LLC, which holds the mortgage on the property. Its bid was $2.75 million.
After the auction, Stephen Grathwolh of Middlefield Holding said that once the company assumes ownership, 'All options will be on the table, including a possible deal with the town.'
'We went as far as we could given the circumstances,' said Middlefield Selectman David J. Lowry. 'Once Middlefield [Holding] takes ownership we will begin another chapter in the town's saga to save a ski area.'

Powder Ridge's Future Up For Grabs Saturday
- Sometime this afternoon, the town will win or lose the former Powder Ridge ski resort, its signature destination for 47 years.
Bidding on the shuttered, bankrupt, 246-acre property starts at noon at the entrance to the resort on Powder Hill Road.
The price of admission at the foreclosure auction is a $500,000 cashier's check.
The winner signs the deposit check over to the clerk of Superior Court, Middletown, and, subject to the approval of a judge, walks away with Powder Ridge.
