Owning exotic animals like the Burmese Python is a little like getting a tattoo and a little like getting married. In both cases, you really don't know what you're getting into, and the back door is a long way off.

Whatever the fascination with these carnivorous reptiles, they are matched in brain capacity by the people who buy them. Equality.

Some are attracted to them simply because they are a threat, and to small-brains, owning one is making a personal statement. We don't need no education.

Releasing them into a habitat where they have no natural enemies is the height of stupidity and, in the case of the Everglades, criminal, and should be treated as such.

Pythons and Boas have no place in Florida. Allow anyone to kill the snakes and use the meat and skin, no limit. Some can make money doing it. We need all the "industry" we can get ... and it will be doing a service. Remember the old days of Florida shops with alligator handbags? Now we can have snakeskin.

You can never find a PETA when you need one. Let PETA round up all the pythons and take them home to their children, watch TV with them, teach them principles of kindness, send their pythons to college and get civil service jobs. We need more pythons in the Post Office. They'll fit right in at Health Education and Welfare.

God forbid Crist puts a bounty on pythons. We'll end up debating reparations to pythons in the Florida legislature.

If python meat is edible, and I see no reason why it wouldn't be, make it a delicacy and sell it in Walmart. Guarantee the PETA morons that all pythons were slaughtered humanely, by strangulation the way they themselves kill their own prey.

Naw .... sell it in Florida restaurants ... like gator tail. It could replace chicken wings at happy hour.
Genuine snake skin belts and shoes anyone?

Can't sell it in restaurants without upsetting the Micosukees who supply gator tail. Can't sell it in Publix because shopping is supposed to be a pleasure, not fun. Can't sell it in South Beach because it violates Burmese civil rights and doesn't support gay marriage.

So get in your airboat or your ATV, head out to where they are dumped, mostly along Alligator Alley, and bring a machete. Leave the heads for the 'gators. It's healthier than marshmallows.

I would love to wear a Burmese Python rodeo belt.

No reason it couldn't turn into a profitable cottage industry ... as long as the politicians don't try and over-regulate it.
At the very least, the hunting would prevent the snakes from speading too far from the everglades ... which could be a serious problem.

A modest bounty would work just fine. The problem is not ahead of Florid, it's right now. There are something like 150,000 of these snakes (estimated) and they are at the top of a convenient little food chain.

They attack and eat 'gators, okay no big deal because there are plenty of gators. But they also crowd out the panthers which IS a big deal because there are only 80 of them and the pythons eat their cubs.

If you cut one's head off to collect a bounty, the PETA maniacs will scream bloody murder and force Florida to relocate the snakes and provide counseling for them.

PETA hollers about swatting a fly ... so they are loons to be ignored.
I think the proper course would be to offer tax free status to those who would sell snake meat and snake skins. Make it profitable. Maybe even offer to buy the meat and skins until a market develops. The wrong way would be for government to fund the hunting and killing ... and try to micromanage ... they would just screw it up.

They should be eradicated. They are not native, with no natural predators here. Their population will grow and threaten native species. In the meantime owning such animals as "pets" should be prohibited. These idiots who think they can handle and care for a python end up finding they're wrong(on many levels). This is why we have this problem in the first place. I feel confident we can do this. We did it to the passenger pidgeon (our bad). We almost did it to the bison and wolves (thank goodness we didn't). This time it is different. So mount up America, it's snake hunting time!

you nailed it on the head with "this why we have this problem in the first place." but my question is why blame the pet for the owners negligence. also look at the past failures your country has committed in trying to control other over populated spieces. killing a beautiful burmese python is not the answer. i believe that a search and relocation project would be a better solution. let's set up a rec centre so that we can further educate people on how to care and accept these animals. i wonder if this would be in discussion if the dog population was as numerous as the python population?

Daily Horoscope for December 17

Taurus

Catch up with the chores today, especially if you've got a long list of them and you want to get through them all before Christmas. You're feeling nicely efficient without wanting to work yourself into the ground, so carry on at a steady pace. A few well-chosen words in a certain person's ear will be more effective than a lengthy conversation at other times.
