Bailout - The Sky is Falling - Bailout

I can honestly claim membership in the 'Armchair' Economical Expert Club. I, like many others spout opinions, with some sort of authority, and make it sound like I know what I am talking about. Having said that, I believe it is time we take off our 'emotional hats' and put on our 'logical hats'.

We have heard the sky is falling, far too long. I queried many people about this economical crisis and they have all answered about the same: "I dunno." "Greed." "Stupidity." "The Republicans." "The Democrats." From close to 150 inquiries, not one person could sit down with me and explain why the sky is falling and how we got where we are economically.

Of course, I have an opinion. I looked at a house to purchase. This was a nice 1800 sq. ft. house, 3br, nasty looking carpet, nasty yard, in need of paint, could probably use new appliances and I am not sure about the heat / AC. I figured it would take about $10,000 to get it where I would feel comfortable living in it. The house was offered by the owner for $110K, which was about where the market was, about 2 years ago. Seeing that I had to put about $10k into repairs and/or renovation, I offered $100k. She hemmed - hawed and countered offered with a 6 month lease, while she made up her mind. (Was she out of her mind?) I walked away from the deal. I am to the point in my life, where I can be a little choosey about the flakes I do business with.

Two months later, she decided to sell it for $120k, then would deduct $10k for repairs / renovation. Well, math may not have been my major, but that takes us back to $110k. Before I could get back to her, she rented the house out for a 6 month lease.

Then, interest rates started coming down dramatically, which of course made buying a house look even better. I went back to her, ready to accept the $120k offer, when the renters moved, making for what I thought was an easy transition. Within 1 week, she raised her priced to $190k. This time, I walked away, very quickly and decided to take the wait & see position.

Sure enough, within 3 months, the price on the house and others just like hers went upwards of $220k to $250k. Interest rates were still coming down and everybody, including family pets were getting loans. The house sold for $230k, less than a year from when the house was selling for $110k. Who bought it?
