Farmer's trucks raising ire in Longswamp Twp.

Lower Macungie Township Commissioners have a tough decision to make: Close a road to large trucks and appease safety concerns in a neighboring township or save a local farmer time and money by continuing to allow him to drive tractor-trailers on the route.

Officials in Longswamp Township, Berks County want the township to post a sign near the Lehigh/Berks border on Fairchild Street banning large trucks. Residents along a steep decline on the road in Longswamp say trucks often run off the roadway or force other cars onto lawns. Although the problem is in Berks County, not Lehigh, officials in Longswamp need Lower Macungie to post the sign because once motorists cross the township and county line, they don't have an option to turn off the road and are committed to going up and down the steep, narrow hill.

Lower Macungie commissioners OK revised budget

Lower Macungie commissioners have passed the township's revised budget, expanding the one passed two months ago by about $700,000 to include the hiring of six new office employees, renovations to a historic home on a township-owned farm, more money for a local youth group and funding to provide better internal controls.

The revised $16.24 million 2008 spending plan replaces the $15.52 million budget passed by township supervisors in December. The board of three supervisors was replaced by five commissioners in January when the township shifted from second- to first-class -- the result of a voter referendum passed in November and sparked by the alleged embezzlement of $2.5 million by Margaret Szulborski, a former supervisor and township employee.
