Suicidal man tries to crash into CHP officer

A 21-year-old Merced man allegedly tried to crash his car into a California Highway Patrol vehicle over the weekend in an apparent suicide attempt, officers told the Sun-Star. CHP Officer Angel Fuentes was not injured when the Merced man deliberately tried to ram his vehicle around 3 a.m. Sunday on Highway 99 in Merced, Officer Moises Onsurez confirmed.

25-year-old man arrested in Merced bank robbery

A 25-year-old man was arrested by Merced police Saturday afternoon after allegedly robbing the Chase Bank inside Raley's off Yosemite Avenue. The suspect, identified as Shawn Lee Canfield, allegedly walked into the grocery store after 1:30 p.m. and approached the bank counter, handing the teller a note demanding all the money and "no funny money," according to a Merced police press release.
