MEDINA: Ale in Autumn a a successa

i wish medina would do something for the kids instead of encourgeing booze. don't we have enough drunks in town.

Medina does a great number of things for "the kids" including the upcoming Beggers Night on Main Street, The fall Scarecrow Festival, The Santa Claus Parade and Christmas Fair, and the Christmas parade of lights to name a few. The Ale in Autumn event was designed to bring adults into the many downtown businesses to benefit the business owners. It was a great success and brought in excess of 250 people to the business district with no problems or bad issues. It is not always about "the kids". Some things are for adults to enjoy.

The recent Ale in Autumn beer tasting in downtown Medina was one of the best events I have ever attended. It was great fun to have a taste of beers from the many micro brewers and from around the world. I was amazed at the many wonderful shops and stores located in the beautiful historic buildings. We stayed on for dinner in a first class main street restaurant. Well done Medina! Looking forward to next year.

To bad they couldn't support a local store when buying the beer. Nice to bring people into the local businesses but why not use one themselves?

What's really too bad is that the Journal can't proof read their headlines. This one reads like someone is in mid-sneeze and reminds me of the "Tim Horton's Breaks Down" headline (should have been breaks ground, but at least "down" is a word).

What exactly is a a sucessa?

what about the teens? do we really need this in our town? how about a food taste. give the diners some business. if seeing a bunch of people walking down the street with a glass of beer is going to make me shop in medina. are you kidding!!!!!!

In response to some of the previous comments...
In fact about a third of the beer purchased did come from a local store employing a great number of local people and paying a very significant amount of local property tax. In an effort to bring some of the less available micro brews to the event a a store that purchases directly from these small brewers was used. There are NO beer distributors located in Medina, so no matter where the beer is purchased a portion of the money goes out of town. The local restaurants had a very significant increase in business due to the event.

Disappointed needs to get a life. There are so many activities for kids & teens now days that they are truly jaded. Check your school taxes. Every sports and social program you can think of is paid for by the "adults" and for all that investment we turn out too many kids with no real education. Maybe fewer activities and more education would turn out better adults. Maybe even adults that can taste a beer responsibly and not feel that they are cheating "the kids or the teens".

Two hundred fifty people come to town and spend money, have a good time with no problems, support the businesses on Main Street, dine in our restaurants, promise to tell their friends and come again VS a couple of people whining about spelling problems, "the kids" whatever that means and where the beer was purchased. The numbers have it. Those that benefited and enjoyed far out number the complainers and local crumudgeons.

you are right the beer and wine is the only way we can get people to come to the village.enjoy!!!!

If you have a better idea or way to bring that many people to Medina DO IT!! There are those that do a lot of work and those that sit back and complain. Where do you fit in? In your world the folks out in Napa Valley or here on the Niagara Wine Trail are wrong also. Why don't you make a tourism attraction out of "the kids" or "the teens". Lead, follow or get out of the way.

Medina is an amazing town! We visit there often and have friends who reside there. It's our impression that there is plenty for kids in Medina based off what our friends kids say they do: all kinds of baseball, football, and soccer leagues, golf, bowling.. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, band, chorus, summer park program, a skate park, places to fish, tons of other school related activities... I don't know... from what we've seen it looks like Medina offers a lot for kids!!! We have actually considered relocating and may yet do so. And by the way, we did attend the Ale in Autumn and completely enjoyed Medina's fantastic downtown. Ate dinner there too! Keep it up Medina! You are the best kept secret in WNY!

I agree with "Outstanding". We discovered Medina via the canal on a boat trip. We have been coming back now for the Day Out With Thomas, or simply to enjoy an afternoon drive to a very pleasant community. Other communities would love to have not only the shops and restaurants you do, but the absolutely amazing collection of historic buildings. Your downtown is like a trip back in time! What a treasure! We can't get enough of it! We enjoy driving around the village looking at the beautiful homes and churches. We didn't make it to the Ale in Autumn, but two of our friends did- they raved about the whole experience. They shopped the shops and had dinner as well. All we could say is "I told you so!" I hope Medina begins to appreciate what they have. We do! We think it's awesome and we will continue to come back!

Hey Newark, Don't be so defensive. Clearly you were one of the organizers, and are very proud of yourself, but you should either learn from the criticism in these comments. Or just ignore them, since you are convinced of your own opinions.

For example, shopping at Tops for your beer isn't in the spirit of what one commenter was saying. Beverages and More could have gotten all the beers you had, and is locally owned. I shop there all the time, they have a great selection and the owner can recommend order more.

While Tops employs people and pays taxes, they also drove two locally owned supermarkets under. Two business that also paid taxes and employed people, so pardon me if I don't bow down and kiss their feet.

FWIW, I enjoyed this event as well as Wine About Winter, I think there are far too few adult oriented activities given the amount of family or child oriented events we have.

PS I made the spell check comment don't think it's whining to expect a "professional" news organization to be able to spell. That typos get indexed by Google and diminish any chance of outsiders seeing an article, unless they happen to type in the same mistakes. At least I didn't just dismiss them and say "get a life."

Hey Boston, MA, don't be so defensive! Clearly you are a friend of the owner of Beverages and More, and are very proud of yourself, but you should learn that there are many places in town that sell beer and it would be impossible to patronize them all!

I seriously doubt that a purposeful and malicious decision was made slight your friend's store! Perhaps in the future your friend could extend a friendly hand of cooperation with the organizers and perhaps be a positive part of next years project!

Maybe build a bridge rather than tear down? Just a thought... trying to stay positive?

see what beer has done to this discussion.i rest my case. no problem in your home or out to dinner. but what message are you sending to the young people who get arrested for drinking on the street. just because a group of people say it is okay to walk around with a glass of beer down main street the law is shoved under the table? these wine tours are done with a lot of planning and they are done at their business.this has hurt relationships in the village and that is never a good thing,i love medina. i would like these things to involve the whole family after all that is what medina is trying to do.look what good things mr. meier does in his shop. all that talent in arts.lets be known as the smart toun not the beer town,
