The aging park also was once home to the city's first swimming pool -- a hole in the ground filled with water -- and a zoo that drew tourists to the then-small cotton farming community to gawk at squirrels, possums, porcupines, a "talking crow" and a black bear. Now it's a place where local residents every weekend lug coolers packed with ice, soda cans and juice boxes.
