Fireworks are tantamount to animal abuse. If it must be allowed, it should be only the eve of the 4th. Out here in Fieldbrook, our neighbors celebrate like a 3rd world country. Gunshots and fireworks on any and all holidays and the whole 4th of July week. Our dogs are absolutely terrified. It is horrible and should be banned.

Fireworks and pyro shows should be banned, period. They do more damage and only offer a few moments of enjoyment to some.

Sorry, but annoying your dogs via fireworks isn't a crime. I have a dog who is terrified of every loud noise and yes, I too find fireworks annoying, but banning fireworks simply because you think it's "horrible" is pretty ridiculous.

Our dog traditionally hates 4th of July too, and several years ago ran 5 miles away (luckily he has our number on his tag). We dread the holiday every year for his sake.
But this year we found a tincture at Petco, something with skullcap and valerian in it. We gave it to him twice over the course of the day and night, and it really made a big difference. No panting, shaking or jumping in our laps (he's big!).
Last year we tried a calming supplement with L-tryptophan and it didn't work as well. As he gets older, we fear he might have a heart attack this time of year, so we are really relieved to find this. Hope this helps somebody.

Pulling the wings off flies is not a crime but indicates a sick individual who is likely to eventually harm humans. The same people who are uncaring around animals often abuse their children or spouse. Cruelty is cruelty and it knows no bounds.

I live in Fieldbrook, too, and the gunshots and fireworks play havoc with our dogs' nerves, too. I am prepared for New Years and the 4th of July, but why must people carry it over to the day before and the day after?? It's bad enough on the actual holiday, when you know it's coming, but setting off fireworks and shooting off guns before or after is really, incredibly annoying! Just because we live out in the country, doesn't mean we still don't have to get up in the morning and go to work, so please have more consideration for your neighbors and limit you celebrations to the actual holiday, PLEASE!

I usually give my dog two "Relax Form" (you get them at the Farm Store) which is an herbal tranquilizer. Other wise he'd shake and shiver and wet himself. This way he is mellow and we can enjoy the fireworks.

If people would keep their pets indoors or in a garage the shelters wouldn't have to be dealing with all these animals. I make sure my dog is fed and then lock him in the bedroom until the nights over. He is perfectly happy and isn't scared by outside noises because he is INSIDE! I've never had a problem in the 12 years I have done this.
