Wesley Clark, 18, of 1402 Leger Fork Road, Tyner, Ky.recovering his money
By Jessica Bruni, Times Staff
Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 9:03 PM EST
CHIPPEWA TWP. — It might have been a classic case of lost and found, but the “found” in this case was more than $2,500 in cash and a small amount of marijuana.
Chippewa Township police reported they were called to the Wal-Mart on Route 51 around 8 p.m. Feb. 23, after a customer found a package containing the cash and the drugs in the store parking lot.
The customer took the package, which contained $2,713 in cash, to the store’s customer service center. Wal-Mart employees called police from there.
According to the criminal complaint, officers retrieved the package and had taken it to the station when they received another call from Wal-Mart.
The owner of the package had arrived.
Police said Wesley Clark, 18, of 1402 Leger Fork Road, Tyner, Ky., showed up at the store’s customer service desk asking for his package.
Clark readily admitted the marijuana — found in a clear plastic bag inside the package, but separate from the money — was his, according to police. He is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The cash was returned to Clark, who said the money was from an accident insurance claim.
Chippewa Police Chief Clint Berchtold said there was not enough evidence to tie the money to a drug violation.
“It was such a small amount of the illegal substance,” he said. “If it would have been a larger amount, we might have deemed it as intent to deliver, and we might have wanted to hold that money to prove it wasn’t dirty or due to other transactions involving drugs.”
Berchtold was unsure whether Clark presented officers with proof the money was from an insurance claim.
Since Clark was traveling from Pittsburgh back to Kentucky, Berchtold also said it was reasonable that Clark was carrying such a large amount of money for traveling expenses.
He did not know why Clark was in Beaver County, but said officers understood he would be returning shortly to his hometown in Kentucky.
He guessed Clark might not have known the package had been opened by Wal-Mart employees and its contents revealed before police arrived.
“He was willing to say it was my package, though,” Berchtold said. “He was willing to take the hit for the marijuana charge to get the cash back.”

Crash kills Madison sophomore
Crash kills Madison sophomore
By Ashlee Clark
ACLARK@HERALD-LEADER.COM
Slick roads probably contributed to a car accident Friday morning that killed a Madison Southern High School sophomore, Berea Police said.
Dustin Scalf, 16, was southbound on U.S. 25 south of Herndon Lane a little before 8 a.m. when his 1996 Toyota slid across the center line. His car hit a 2001 Volkswagen being driven by Susan Patton, 46, said Capt. Ken Clark of the Berea Police Department. It appears that Scalf died upon impact.
Patton, the mother of a Madison Southern junior, was treated and released at St. Joseph Berea.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and each of their airbags deployed, Clark said. Police don't think drugs or alcohol were factors.
Counselors were at the school Friday to talk to students and staff.
"The loss of one so young with so many things to live for is devastating," said Tommy Floyd, interim superintendent of Madison County schools.
Scalf is survived by his parents and an older brother. Funeral arrangements at the Lakes Funeral Home in Berea are pending.
