New Community Garden in Mattapan

Boston Natural Areas Network , an affiliate of statewide nonprofit The Trustees of Reservations , launched the new Woolson Street Community Garden in Mattapan on on September 6th with Mayor Martin J. Walsh. Converted from a once vacant lot at 44 Woolson St. which the City of Boston transferred to BNAN, the new Community Garden is the newest of five community gardens in Mattapan, two of which are owned and managed by BNAN.

3 charged with robbery, attempted robbery of livery driver

Three people are facing charges that they lured a livery driver to a Boston address and robbed him at knifepoint, and then attempted the same thing the very next day, officials said. Molijah Burey, 22, of Dorchester, Nadige Aime-Baskin, 19, of Mattapan, and Nicole Jackson, 19, of Mattapan, were arraigned last Friday in Dorchester Municipal Court.

A Mattapan man who police wanted for questioning after his 6-year-old son died Thursday took his own life yesterday when cops arrived at his door, Boston police said. Patrick Marcelin, 49, answered the door at a Morton Street apartment at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday with a kitchen knife in his hand and began stabbing himself when he saw detectives, police said.

Old abandoned building at new mall on Hyde Park/Mattapan line catches fire

Firefighters are at the new mall off River Street by Wood Avenue for what is now a three-alarm fire in the smaller of two remaining buildings from the old Mattapan Paperboard complex. Because of the difficulty in getting to the building from River Street, many firefighters are coming in via an old bridge over the Neponset River from Truman Parkway.

Boston Foundation assets exceed $1 billion

The Boston Foundation's assets have passed the $1 billion mark, after a year of strong investment gains and a record $112 million in grants made to charities. The 99-year-old community foundation also recorded its second-best year of raising money, as donors sent it $112 million during the fiscal year ended June 30. The foundation had raised $131 million the prior year, when many philanthropists were concerned about possible changes in the tax code that could have affected the deductibility of donations.
