Two Olympic Peninsula tribes say federal, state and county officials have failed to protect tribal shellfish beds in Marrowstone Island's Mystery Bay in violation of treaty rights.

Long before Johnny Cash popularized the song "Ring of Fire", U.S. naval tacticians constructed a triangle of fire at the mouth of Washington state's Admiralty Inlet, within sight of Victoria and the southern Lower Mainland.

East Beach County Park was endangered last summer when the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation placed yellow tape at the entrance, blocking public use of the fallen-down picnic shelter and sandstone fireplace.

They flock to this Marrowstone Island village each New Year's Day to drop their clothes, jump off the dock into bone-chilling waters and swim like crazy to shore before they turn blue.

The final chapter is near its close in Jefferson County Public Utility District's six-year battle to extend water service to Marrowstone Island, a community plagued by dry and saltwater-tainted wells.
