Martin Luther King, Jr., picked Marks, Miss., the poorest community in the country, as the launch site of his Poor People's Campaign in 1968. In April 1968, days after Martin Luther King, Jr., was murdered in Memphis, Tenn., Sen. Robert F. Kennedy visited the Mississippi Delta at the urging of civil rights lawyer Marian Wright.
