Ramsey County sheriff's reserve officer, 'kind spirit,' killed on volunteer job

Full story: The Minneapolis-St. Paul Pioneer Press

As a reserve deputy, Michael Wilken was known as Big Mike, the 300-plus-pound "gentle giant." He worked crowd control at hockey games, parades and hundreds of other civic events during his 10 years with the Ramsey County Sheriff's office, a constant contributor who loved creating "a safe place for kids " and whose size belied his soft voice and ...

I worked side by side with Mike at the Impound Lot for a few years. Without a doubt, he was one of the best co-workers anyone could ask for. When I was pregnant, he always made sure to tell me to sit while he did the "hard work" - when my daughter was born, he fawned over her and when she became a toddler, he would bend down to talk to her - she just adored seeing him.

When I went through a tough break-up, Mike was always there with a ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on. He was so much more than a co-worker, he was a friend.

After I left the lot for other endeavors, I didnt see Mike too often, but ran into him at the State Fair or elsewhere. Friday night - the night before he died, I ran into him at the Fright Farm where he was working. For that chance meeting, I am grateful.

Mike will always be remembered for his volunteer work and giving nature. I will always remember him as my friend and co-worker and someone who cared about me even when I found it hard to care about myself.

Thanks for the good times Mike and for all the good you did for the people of Saint Paul, Ramsey County and your friends and family.

Love you Big Mike,

L

I remember working with Mike by phone - me doing data at the PD and he at the Impound Lot. Worked some snow emergencies with him as well. Was really bummed when a co-worker showed this to me. He had a great sense of humor, was funny to commisserate with about the usual problems of towing vehicles, and always was beyond helpful to me. I haven't seen him in almost 10 years, but it sounds like he hasn't changed. My thoughts are with his family and friends who will miss him very much.

Reserve Deputy Wilken sounds like a person who had a big heart, loved what he did, and really cared about the people he worked with. My condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.

God Bless Mike. He was a good man with a heart full of compassion, love, and goodness. Why a good hearted man was struck down in the prime of his life like this is beyond understanding.

Mike- You will be missed by so many people. The lot will never be the same without you. You were such a great co-worker and an even better friend.

To the Wilken Family- Mike was such a great friend and I always knew I was going to have fun at work when Mike was there. Know that there are many people out there praying for you guys.

RIP Mike

I have volunteered w/ Mike on several details w/ the RCSD during the past couple years and he was indeed a very kind, caring, generous person. He will be missed by many. So tragic.

First let me just say that I truly hope "SafetyFirst" is kidding. However, this is not the place for your off-beat attempt at humor because a wonderful person who dedicated his life to the service of others just lost his life, and while others use these comments to express their condolences and share memories, you tarnish it with your ridiculous comment. And worse--if you're serious about expecting pedestrians to wear helmets--you need to stop and think about what you're really suggesting.

Rather than go on about that comment, though, I'd just like to say how very sorry I am to Mike's family, friends, coworkers, and all of the communities his work touched. I knew Mike through his work at a local hockey arena, and he always brought a smile to our faces. He was so friendly, humorous, and concerned for others. While I didn't know him as well as others, I know he will be sorely missed. God bless.

He will never die, because he will be remembered by many. Remembered for doing things some of us dream of doing but never have the drive to do. Sounds like a hero to me, and he did what he loved to do. This is a tragedy, an unnecessary tragedy.

My thoughts are with the family, loved ones and to all the ones he shared his time with.
