Farmer's Market Vendor Finds Opportunity Through New Hobby
Amapola Vivoni, who sells handmade jewelry in Socorro, is thriving in her newfound hobby.
Vivoni is raising money to start her own business, selling her pieces at the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays and at Alamo Mercantile from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
"In Mexico, jewelry sells really well," Vivoni said. "I thought that here in Socorro, a jewelry business would do well also."
Vivoni has lived in the United States for eight years.
She has been working at various restaurants and took a jewelry class at New Mexico Tech. She plans to do a lot with her new hobby.

Young Athletes FromSocorro Area Compete In Junior Olympics
Every summer, the Junior Olympics Program puts on local, regional and national sporting events for youngsters between 8 and 13.
The events were started to give kids the chance to test their skills and athleticism.
Socorro held its own event early this spring. Young athletes from Midway, San Antonio and Magdalena elementaries also came to participate in Socorro's local event.
Participants competed separately in four athletic events: basketball, soccer, tennis and track and field.

Teofilo S. Patterson, 77, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008, at his home in Socorro, N.M.
He was born May 9, 1931, in Magdalena, N.M., to Richard and Mauricia (Sisneros) Patterson.
He was a life-long resident of Socorro and worked for the Bureau of Reclamation as an equipment operator until he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ebler Patterson, of their home in Socorro; sons: Armando Patterson of Lafayette, La.; and Teofilo "Pat" Patterson of Socorro; daughters: Yvonne Rosas and Denise Vargas, both of Socorro; brother, Mickey Patterson of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Corrina Patterson of Socorro; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Magdalena Student Receives National Honor
A Magdalena High School student has received a national honor as he was selected to be a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
William Guin, 16, is being recognized for superior academic achievement by the organization, based in Atlanta, Ga.
According to a press release, the announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.
He said Guin is now a member of a unique community of scholars, "a community that represents the very best hope for the future."

Fire Marshal Urges Caution With Fireworks
Wildfire danger is high in the county and Socorro County Fire Marshal Fred Hollis urges residents to use adequate precautions when lighting fireworks in the next couple of weeks.
In a special meeting Hollis called at the County Annex building Tuesday, city, state and federal agencies discussed fireworks and the increased danger of wildfires.
Cindy Wolfe of the Cibola National Forest's Ranger Station in Magdalena said it's important for the public to keep fireworks safety in mind.
"It is very dry now, and according to the weather service the monsoons will be late this season," Wolfe said. "In Magdalena we're already hearing fireworks going off, and everyone needs to be aware of the danger of incendiary devices landing in fields and setting off a grass fire."

Mag Vaulter Invited To Regional
It's not common for athletes from schools as small as Magdalena to be invited to the Great Southwest Track and Field Classic.
The event is for track athletes from all classifications of schools and features the best from seven states, in addition to a select few from across the country and the world. KC Armstrong, who graduated from Magdalena High in May, is among the select group of athletes who will compete in the 33rd Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque on Saturday.
"KC is a great kid. I've enjoyed having him and I'm going to miss him" said Jory Mirabal, head boys' track coach. "I coached him in every sport since he was a freshman. I'm proud of him."
