Fire near Lovington forces evacuations
A grass fire near Lovington has burned several thousand acres, destroyed a barn and forced the evacuation of three homes.
State Forestry Division spokesman Dan Ware says the Buckeye 4 fire started early Saturday afternoon and is consuming grass and brush.
Ware says two air tankers and about 80 people are battling the fire that is spreading east of Lovington.
A shelter has been set up at a local cafeteria.
The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.
The National Weather Service posted red flag warnings until 8 p.m. Saturday for southwestern and south-central New Mexico because of low humidity, strong winds and extreme fire danger. Read more
