Sounds like a good project to me. I've seen these folks around and I think they are fine. Enough said.

I agree. I would like to see the place with a good design but after that I'm OK with it.

I don't see anything wrong with being pro or con here. As long as your decision is based on facts alone. There are some Muslim bashers, haters in Gwinnett. That's a shame. This should not be decided on fear ,hate ,or a refusal to understand the project. I have a belief in God and wouldn't want something to like this to fail because of my beliefs.

It isn't the Mosque is not the problem here. Actually, the Mosque has been around for about 11 years there on Hwy 29. A new Mosque would be an improvement. It is the Cemetery and the need for rezoning that is the real issue. How would you like a Cemetery of any kind 50 to 60 feet from your back door?

Aside from some people finding it creepy. It "will" bring down property value. And in this economy that's not a good thing. They need to buy property out in the country. Its cheaper ,a better setting ,and its away from people. I hope you win your fight.

Unless you live right behind where this is going, you have no say in the matter. The only people that should be commenting on this are people not out to make a penny on it and those living in the subdivision behind it. It's the wrong location for this expansion. We have drainage issues, it's a small road, it will increase pollution into the subdivision. More noise, more of everything that I did not sign up for when I moved here.

I'm disappointed that the news media seems to be seeking out those who are espousing racist, ignorant garbage. This issue is about the fact that the development violates Lilburn zoning codes and land use plan. These were developed with the input of all the citizens of Lilburn to guide the development of our town. Don't try to make news - just report it.

Your right. I haven't seen any racial comments. Just people who chose to live where they do partially because of the very rules that some are trying to void right now. There are so many great reasons to move this out to the country ,to a less populated area. If these guys are worried about their neighbors having feelings about them that aren't very nice they may want to just abide by the rules that attracted people to the area and change course. After looking at this its nuts to hurt everyone in the area because this mosque wants a cemetery in a certain place. There will be very bad feelings and even damage done if they succeed. Again just my 2 cents.

I got a great idea! Lete just ignore the HOMEOWNERS in Lilburn and let the Muslims build their new mosque and CEMETARY on the property ajacent to their backyards. At least their funerals are quick. They must bury their dead by sundown. So they usually dig NUMERIOUS graves in advance so they will alwars be ready for immediate burial. They bury their dead "AS IS", with NO embalming, NO casket, and NO vault. They put them in a cardboard box, and bury them standing up facing Mecca. I guess the speedy rush for burial and being buried standing up is so your soul will have a running start to all those waiting virgins!! If you must, let them build their mosque. But the CEMETARY would be irresponsible ,disruptive and down right creepy for the HOMEOWNERS who many have their life investments in their homes.Since when did it become politically incorrect to defend the rights and best interests of the AMERICAN CITIZENS who built and live in the NEIGHBORHOODS where they raise thrir CHILDREN?

I don't think the people are against it because it's muslims or a new place to worship. I think most of us that are against it are against it for several reasons - 1) the cemetary where people are buried - no embalming, no casket, and most of us are downhill from the cemetary, 2) the outside sports area will add more noise to the area, 3) the proposed water retention pond will add mosquitos and when it floods, it will be worse again for the neighbors.

Interesting to note that one of the pieces of land being acquired, subject to the rezoning, belongs to the CITY MAYOR. This is a clear conflict of interest, well a conflict of interest for the public and the neighbors. City officials should not be able to profit from rezoning.

Well, there are other cemetaries in that area then what is worng in having another one? Secondly, what is so creepy about cemetary? Don't we all have to end up there one day?
Also, note that there is some racial issues involved since the telivision has reported some of the neighbours as saying that we don't like Muslims. I feel it will be a great addition to the city of LIlburn where not only the city will have some beautiful church buliding, an extrvagant Hindu temple and now a mosque. This is where the cultures and religions can meet. This is what America is all about. Check out why immigrants moved to this land in the biginning.

I do not think there are racial issues involved with the majority of us. Have you talked with the people in the neighborhood yourself or just listened to the media who like to play the most outrageous comments for increased ratings? Why don't you come and talk to the majority of people who really live in the surrounding area and see what we're like? You can ALWAYS find someone in a neighborhood who has racial issues regardless of the neighborhood.

I did not say the cemetary was creepy. I am worried about possible health concerns. Ditto on the water retention pond. And noise and safety concerns on the outdoor sports area.

And, of course, the pending personal profit of the city Mayor who would profit from this change in the zoning.

There is land already zoned for this in the county. We'd prefer they use land in accordance with the current zoning. If they need a Muslim cemeterary, which is COMPLETELY understandable, they need to have land that is already zoned for that.

And yes, I understand completely why immigrants moved to this land. Unless you're a Native American, then we're ALL the family of prior immigrants to this land.

Most of the services held at this mosque are at night when the traffic in the area is almost gone. There are only few days in a celendar year when services are held during the day. I do not thinks it is more than 6 or 8 days. Even on those occassions the mosque does hire Lilburn Police Department to control the traffic. Thus the traffic issue is not an issue.
As for call for the prayers (ADHAN, on one resident of this neighbourhood can claim that they heard it even once in last 11 years. It is done within the prayer hall.
As for the issue raised about the water retaintion, I am sure that the city of Lilburn has its rule and regulations in place and the mosque will also have to follow the same. Thus this is also out of the context as an objection.
Finally, as far as the cemetary
is concern I do not see any thing creepy about it. The mosque management is ready to leave enough easement so that the neighbourhood is not disturbed with any activities in the cemetary. Furthermore, I do not think there is any other place quiter than the cemetary.
This take us to the issue of Mayor making huge profit from the sale of property. I believe the deal is already made for the property as is and not as it will be if rezoned.
And like I wrote there are only few who would make religion an issue.

Well said M. Huprich! I live in the subdivision that will be impacted, St. Albans! 20 feet of my backyard backs up to the mayor's property.

I feel if this Mosque wants to expand, and has the money to purchase adjoining residential land; they also have the benefit of looking elsewhere where rezoning will not be an issue.

I do not care what sort of church is requesting expanding - catholic, protestant, muslim... I choose to deny this rezoning at this location! It's a free country: residents have a right to voice their opinions and be heard (we are placed in a defensive position, not by choice.)- AND - churches of any denomination can expand and build wherever the law permits.

It's unfortunate that a Lilburn city official may be in a position to profit, personally, from adjoining property sale and rezoning. In the end, I pray that those officials we entrusted to make the ultimate rezoning decision will use discretion and wisdom in a fair and just manner that is best for the city and the future of those whom have chosen to live here - not on greed, corruption, religious bias or the media.

The sale of the city Mayor's house and acreage is 100% contingent on the rezoning.

Sounds like the mayor and those towelheads done worked themselves out a real nice deal. Also sounds like you guys need to find yourselves a new mayor. What he's doing to destroy your neighborhood is disgraceful. Do you think they paid him extra to sell his soul and reputation along with the house and land, or do you think he never had a soul to begin with? He needs to be run out of town on a camel!!

dont get me wrong but i dont think we should build it there. just location is all that needs to change this is really close to old town lilburn and lilburn i a great cute little town. religion should have nothing to do with this. this is about lilburn remaning to be OLD town lilburn. there are not that many places like that and we want to be able to give our children a peice of our past. those homes and land has been there since before we were born. that section of hwy 29 is allready crowded enough, now building onto your stucture that you already have there is nothing wrong with that. and i think we shouldnt have to take all this to court. what ever happened to the peace that the world once knew. with land and trees and grass. people in new york dont even know what grass is... lol but im just saying its part of keeping lilburn little. its cozy and comfy. i am not scared if i hav eto walk to chickfula. lets not change that please

Too bad Muzzies, you lost this one for any number of reasons.

1. The Mayor's land = perceived corruption.

2. This is right on the heels of Ft. Hood.

3. We are at war with radical Islam and nobody likes you.

Get over it.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Pisces

Although you're busy putting the finishing touches to your Christmas preparations, you'll also have to pay attention to someone who's feeling neglected or unloved. Luckily, it won't take much to make this person feel better, so a big hug or a little consideration might do the trick. You should also bear in mind that they may be feeling nostalgic or sad about the past.
