The trial of a Liberty man facing an attempted murder charge has been set for June 3. Toby Deaton, 28, is accused of injuring Wesley Gregory, 27, of Cedar Grove in December during a fight in the driveway of a home on U.S. 27 South.

Charles E. "Chalk" Johnson

<![CDATA[RICHMOND, Ind. - Charles E. "Chalk" Johnson, age 84, of Richmond, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Reid Hospital. Born August 3, 1929, in Laurel County, Kentucky, to Charles E. and Nancy Wyatt Johnson, Charles lived in Richmond since 1966. He was a machine operator at H&P Tool for 20 years, retiring in 1988, and also worked at Natco. Charles was a deacon and member of Freedom Missionary Baptist Church, where he volunteered to cut the grass and plant hibiscus. He had volunteered at Reid Hospital for 14 years as a mail carrier and shuttle bus driver. Charles enjoyed gardening and doing things for other people. He loved to laugh and spend time with his family. Charles was a great husband, dad, and grandpa. He dearly loved his wife. Survivors include his wife, Joan Chandler Johnson, to whom he was married January 31, 1950; children, Roberta (Tim) Fienning, Nancy Wood, and Joseph (Star) Johnson, all of Richmond; grandchildren, Joseph (Jennifer) Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Randy (Kristy) Wood, and Robert Clark; great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Ashlee, Cailee, Trinitee, Charlee, Haylee, Allen, and Juanita; sisters, Vivian Shobe of Hamilton, Ohio and Iduma Faye Stewart of Liberty, Indiana; cousins; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Vernie Rice; brother, Lonnie Johnson; and grandson, Charlie Brown. Visitation for Charles E. "Chalk" Johnson will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. H. Lynn Seagraves officiating. Entombment will be in the Earlham Memorial Mausoleum. <![CDATA[Richmond, Ind. - Larry Clayton Raper, age 74, Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana. Born June 21, 1939, in Richmond, to Robert and Mary Stubbs Raper, he lived in Richmond his entire life. Larry was a 1957 graduate of Boston High School. He was employed at Matthews and Sons and at Kaiser and Grammer Industries, where as a professional truck driver he logged over four million accident free miles. Farming was his passion in his spare time and during his retirement years. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, he enjoyed watching IU basketball, Indianapolis Colts football, and NASCAR. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Paula Ann Flatter Raper, to whom he was married on September 30, 1961; two daughters, Shelley Raper of Fishers, Indiana and Beth (Rick) Verhoestra of Fishers, Indiana; son, Bob (Deanna) Raper of Richmond; four grandchildren, Adam Verhoestra, John Verhoestra, Dalton Raper, and Clayton Raper; brother, James (Joan) Raper of Liberty, Indiana; nephew and nieces, Randy Raper of Richmond, Jayma (Dale) Wilburn of Liberty, Indiana, and Jenny (Mark) Boggs of New Paris, Ohio; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Clarence and Grace Raper and Jennie and Clayton Stubbs; and brother, William Raper and his wife Barbara Raper.
