Ceremony at Liberty Memorial honors military veterans
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
As flags snapped in the wind and hundreds of spectators looked on Sunday, Jack Rheuark rose and stepped gingerly toward the empty chair near the Liberty Memorial stage.
Rheuark, a World War II airman who was a prisoner of war in Germany, quickly placed a cover over the back of the chair in recognition of all POWs and troops still listed as missing in action. The cover would remain in place and the chair would remain empty throughout the Veterans Day ceremony.
'It's to let people know we haven't forgotten them,' Rheuark said later. 'They are here, in remembrance, but they're still not home.' Read more
