Judge issues split verdict

“It was a classic tragic case where she would love a do-over”

BELLEFONTE -- A former Penn State student was acquitted of a felony charge of fleeing the scene of a Dec. 2, 2006 vehicle-pedestrian crash after testifying that she never intended to run away but was simply looking for a safe place to park before turning herself into police.

Katherine Applegate, 24, was found guilty Monday of a misdemeanor DUI charge by Centre County President Judge David Grine, but Grine found there was not enough evidence to show she was trying to hide from police when she drove about a mile away from the scene -- the 600 block of East College Avenue -- parked in a parking lot and began walking.
