An overturned rock truck leaking fuel shut down all eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Chaffee Road for several hours Friday morning.

The Lawtey Recreation Department is up to it's old "tricks" again, well "Tricks & Treats'! On Saturday, October 31st, the Lawtey Recreation Department will be hosting its annual Halloween Party. The event will run from 6:00pm - 9:00pm and be held at Tatum Brother's Park. There will be games, a costume contest as well as prizes and of course candy!! Hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks will be available for sale. Bring the family down for a night of safe, Halloween fun!

Beginning on Monday, Sept 21, the qualifying for the upcoming seats on the Lawtey city council, as well as the Cheif of Police begins at noon. Interested candidates are encouraged to stop by city hall to get the appropriate paperwork and pay the associated fees to run for the open seats. The cuurent four year term openings are: City Commisioner Group 1 (currently held by George Shuford) City Commisioner Group 3 (currently held by Jeanette Phillips) City Commisioner Group 5 (currently held by Jimmie Scott) City Clerk (currently held by Lisa Harley) Chief of Police (currently held by Butch Jordan)

The City of Lawtey is experincing a bit of growth, even during the current rough economic period. Back in March of 2009, a Subway restaurant was opened. Coming soon will be the grand opening of a new Dollar General store, located next to the post office right on US 301. Plans are also in the works for an Ace Hardware store to be built in the same area. The new businesses will be a good asset for the small community. Although it was mentioned by Councilman Carton Jones, that he was worried for the Lawtey Supermarket and how the Dollar General would impact their business. Although Dollar General offers basic grocery items, it does not offer the full array of grocery products one can find at the Lawtey Supermarket.The Lawtey Supermarket also has its own specialty niche in the area with its fresh cut meats and meat deals that it offers. The tax benefits of the new businesses will be good for the city. This may also be the beginning of more interest by other businesses to set up in the local area.

The annual Back-2-School Block Party, hosted by the Lawtey Recreation Dept, is on tap for Saturday, August 8th. The festivities will begin at 11am, with food, waterslides, live entertainment and the annual ritual of free school supplies being passed out. This year the party will be held at the Lawtey Community School.

The local pet rescue group, Bradford Paws, is in the start-up stages of having a local pet food bank for helping out those in need. Due to current economic conditions, Bradford Paws is wanting to help out those in need who have pets they want to keep, but are struggling financially to keep. The following items are being sought for donation: Adult dog food - dry/canned Puppy food - dry/canned Cat/Kitten food - dry/canned Horse feed Treats So far, two local businesses have stepped forward to be drop-off points for donated food. Bradford County Paws, pet rescue group, will be holding a dog washing fundraiser on July 11th from 10am til 5pm. The event will be held at Katie Sue's Clip & Dip located at 18536 US 301 North (next to Smith Brother's Body Shop). Dog washes will be done for only $5.00, proceeds will be used for future pet rescues and homeless pets in our community. Hot dogs, drinks and chips will be available, so grab your dog and c'mon down. A man known as a oeHappy Jacka knocked on the door of a Lawtey, Fla. residence Wednesday night and attacked a male homeowner with a rake.

A 16-YEAR-OLD GIRL SAID A "CRAZY" MAN HELD HER AGAINST HER WILL FROM TUESDAY UNTIL SUNDAY, sexually assaulting and pistol-whipping her and threatening to shoot her near the city's water plant at 1109 Banyan Blvd., the girl told police.

The Lawtey Recreation Department is having a big yard sale event on Thursday May 7 - Saturday, May 9! From 8am - 2pm. Be sure to stop by on Saturday, May 9th as they ill be having a Crab Boil with dinners being sold for $8.00 each. Proceeds from this event will benefit future recreation events. The dinners will include crab, sausage, corn-on-the-cob, boiled potato and boiled eggs. Come by, grab a dinner and browse the wares of the yard sale.

A man from Jacksonville is dead following a crash on Highway 301. The Florida Highway Patrol says Jess Delossantos Deocampo, 48, was southbound near Lawtey Monday afternoon around 5 when he lost control of his SUV.

A Jacksonville man was killed in a single vehicle crash in Bradford County about 5:15 p.m. Monday.
