The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent the 1950s advocating racial harmony and peaceful co-existence between blacks and whites with the Word of God as his spiritual weapon, as well as through his nonviolence demonstrations.

These Delta towns tend to resemble one another - perhaps a nice bank on Main Street and a few well-kept homes with wraparound porches, but then come the railroad tracks and a multitude of woebegone shacks with leaky roofs and mangy, half-starved dogs keeping watch from patches of surrounding weeds.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is hoping to draw 50,000 people to the Mississippi Delta this summer to highlight poverty in America.
