Police in northwest Indiana say three people were killed when a car went off the road into a grassy area, became airborne and struck a tree, then rolled over and landed upside down in a creek.

Traffic stop leads to 6 Newton County arrests

KENTLAND -- A traffic stop figured in the arrests of six people this week, the Newton County Sheriff's Department reported. Deputy Steven Holder observed a vehicle traveling left of center early Monday. The driver, Kasey L. Cuevas, 23, of Valparaiso was wanted on a Jasper County warrant. A passenger, John J. Wachadlo, 36, of Cedar Lake, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine. Both were booked into the Newton County Jail. A search warrant was then obtained for a Lake Village residence. As a result, Joshua M. Nelson, 26, was arrested on suspicion of maintaining a common nuisance and possession of cocaine and paraphernalia. Three others were arrested as well. On Wednesday night, jail officials declined to say if the suspects were still in custody.
