Hate Crime Summit Success in East County
The Even One Is Too Many Hate Crime Summit was held at the Ronald Reagan Center in El Cajon last Thursday with hundreds of guests coming to listen, learn and question the issues facing East County.
Assembly Member Lori Saldana welcomed the participants and guests challenging everyone to open their minds to implications of the hate crime on all aspects of our society.
James McElroy, CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center shared the history of hate crime victories and examples of what is happening around the US.
A panel discussion reviewed scenarios and commented on the perspective of law enforcement, the legal system, education, human rights and parental care generating questions from the floor that could have lasted late in the night if there had been more time.
The panelists included Captain Guy Chambers of the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, Oscar Garcia of the San Diego District Attorney's Office, Morris Casuto of the Anti-Defamation League of San Diego, Margo Cole of the Board of Education and Denise Brown, mother of a hate crime victim.
The Summit was sponsored by the Coalition for a Hate Free San Diego which is a partnership of more than 80 faith and community leaders organized to identify, educate and advocate for a Hate Free San Diego to improve the safety and security of all San Diego citizens.
Edgar Hopida of the Council on American Islamic Relations San Diego offered the opening prayer and The Very Reverend Scott E. Richardson of Saint Pauls Episcopal Cathedral offered the closing prayer.
Estela de Los Rios of the Center for Social Advocacy, based in El Cajon challenged the guests in her closing remarks to work together toward a better understanding of the issue underlying hate crime in our area offering the them 'Even One Is Too Many.'
