Voters overwhelmingly rejected a 0.5 percent sales tax hike that Lorain County officials insisted was necessary to avoid additional cuts to county services.

Two laid-off Lorain County Sheriff's deputies were back on the streets Thursday, knocking on doors in an effort to convince voters to leave in place a 0.5 percent sales tax hike imposed by county commissioners earlier this year.

Several people shared memories Saturday as the bike path that stretches from Kipton to Elyria was dedicated in honor of longtime politician Don Pease at the Oberlin Depot.

The goal is that someday recreational athletes will be able to hop on a trail at the mouth of the Black River in Lorain and run, walk, bike or rollerblade all the way to Kipton in southern Lorain County.

Free vegetables will be provided to low-income residents of southern Lorain County 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
