St Marys Still Searching for Identity

By Emily Heglund Published: Friday, May 8, 2009 9:51 AM EDT Tribune-Georgian St. Marys is in the process of developing a new logo and slogan in an attempt to refresh its image and redefine its identity. The consultants hired for the project recently sought input from residents about St. Marys' strengths and weaknesses. They also asked what locals hope to see for the future of the city. The first two are fairly easy to define. St. Marys' strengths? Its location, scenery, waterfront park, friendly citizens and intriguing history.
Weaknesses? A lack of employment outside of Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, a significant distance from Interstate 95 and a lack of retail -- not to mention the sand gnats. When it comes to the future of St. Marys, however, things get a little harder to pin down. The city has a long history as an industrial town. It first served as a hub in the commercial fishing industry. Later, the paper mill employed thousands of local residents, many of whom still live within walking distance of the site. However, St. Marys seems to be struggling with its identity now that those industries are gone. The city's history and atmosphere give it strong potential as a tourism destination. However, its lack of a beach may hinder it slightly in its attempts to draw tourists from the sugary sands of the Golden Isles or Florida. What's that you say? We do have a beach? Ah yes, Cumberland Island. The national seashore is truly a jewel in our national park system, and St. Marys is in prime position as the only access point for those without personal watercraft or a reservation at Greyfield. But the city also has a long way to go when it comes to capitalizing on the tourists who enter St. Marys on their way to the Cumberland ferry. Many of those people return from the island, get into their cars and leave without setting foot in a local restaurant or gift shop. You can't blame the tourists. Businesses only do as well as they advertise, but the city also has a duty to do as much as it can to help inform tourists about all St. Marys has to offer. Marketing, especially signage, is crucial for tourism communities. Midtown St. Marys, in particular, could use a little "signage makeover," as it were. And not just from the standpoint of businesses in that area. Midtown is littered with metal plates screwed to metal poles stuck haphazardly into the rights of way by the city and state: speed limit signs, airport signs, hospital signs, fire department signs, school zone signs, directional signs - you get the point. A midtown merchants' authority or other business group might be able to work with the city to clear some of the clutter and bring a more cohesive look to midtown. For St. Marys, the key to future success lies in capitalizing on its strengths and working to correct its weaknesses through controlled growth that meets a strict set of ordinances. Progress will come to St. Marys, whether some want to admit it or not. Let's work now to make sure it's the kind of progress we want.

More of the same hogwash to keep jobs. They must appear to be busy and productive when in reality, most of them don't have a clue.

You could be right. The phrase "you can put lipstick on a pig but it will still be a pig" applies in this case.

Now, before someone blows a gasket let me say I love St Marys and have no intentions of leaving but the fact remains that it is a small town on a deadend road with little or no real tourist attractions. They can do whatever to try to change that but when the tourists get off the interstate and comes to St Marys they will find that the exciting picture the tourist bureau painted is in reality a small, quaint town on a deadend road with a few places of interest. After 2-3 of sightseeing and shopping they will be on their way back to I-95 and taking it either north or south.

That is why I used the pig analogy.

it has not been proven that St.Marys is the second oldest city in the United States...tha tis just folk lore ...or someone just thought another Saint deserved credit...not that I have a problem with that...I truly don't...but honestly...this is just a opinion and not a fact.

These people who purchased street front homes downtown and then converted them into storefronts have hijacked the city council and DDA. This strategy of pouring hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to try and get people to come to their shops has failed. You'll never be Fernandina, or St. Simons,or River Street(Savannah),or St. Augustine. Instead of trying to lure people from other states to you doors have you ever thought of luring the 50,000 who live here in Camden County to your door. There are so many issues with trying to make downtown a retail destination I can't list them all. Parking,Traffic,etc.,etc.

First you have to get the certain people who have several properties and many indfluences off thier high horse. Downtown needs a revamp as their is no continuity from the mill property on down. That being said, the question they should ask instead of what is our new identity...is what will get people downtown? Ask the locals that question. Don't waste money on consultants....do it yourself.

The ONLY way to lure people to downtown St. Marys is with continual festivals. There is no other reason to go there. They are again wasting money they don't have to spend. The only time downtown has any action is when a festival is taking place. So a creative mind would find ways to have festivals that generate revenue for the City. Once you lure them find as many ways a possible to get their money.

You have about five families that own most of the property downtown and they have businesses located in those properties that no one other than themselves are really interested in. So they do any and everything to keep everyone else out so their businesses can prosper NOT. And they coherce the City to fund way to draw more traffic to those businesses. Hence the reason for the new identity.

I have a great slogan "Our secret society downtown St. Marys" 1252

Politics..your are very creative..."City of Festivals"...however, they need to get some of those "oldie but goodies' rock and rollers to appear...they come pretty reasonable...and they could advertise that ...and get some vendors down there etc...at least once per month...they could use the revenue off of the vendors(and I am sure many vendors need some $ too) to pay for the 'star' of the festival...or concert...whatever they want to call it...downtown only has 3 restaurants...maybe 4 I don't know they close as soon as they open...an over priced book store...most folks shop Amazon for books...but yes, a festival; concert...1000's of people go to Odum for a Cherry Festival...or did...I don't keep up anymore...even little Hoboken has a huge Blue Grass fling...they just had one I think...St.Marys hasn't anything but the ferry to Cumberland...show the dang Ferry...and the Ferry to and from Fernandina and I bet those folks would come to a concert...personally it is the same old drawn out entertainment that I have seen way too too much...anyway...good idea Politics...you run for mayor...I will vote for you.

Daily Horoscope for November 11

Cancer

You can enjoy today's energy, no matter how frantic the pace of life might seem. Plan to meet a friend for lunch and talk about silly things; there is no need to stay serious all the time, so let loose for a while. Pick the brains of someone older and wiser. If you're the oldest person you know, you'll be surprised at how much wisdom can come from the mouths of babes.
