Most of Maui was left without electricity Wednesday afternoon when the Kahului power plant went down, Maui Electric Co. said.
Only West Maui was unaffected by the outage that began around 1 p.m., company spokeswoman Kaui Awai-Dickson said.
Power to some areas was restored about 90 minutes later, and by 2:30 p.m. power was back on in most of Wailuku and to such 'critical infrastructure' areas as Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kahului Airport and the police department, she said.
As of 5:30 p.m., only Makawao and Haiku were without electricity, and service to those areas was expected to be restored in a few hours, Awai-Dickson said. Read more
