State braces for fewer tourists with ATA's closure

“If I'm going to be stuck somewhere, I'd rather be stuck in paradise”

The loss of more than 700,000 passenger seats to Hawaii with the closure of ATA Airlines has state tourism officials worried about a significant drop in visitors this year.

Although the state is encouraging other airlines to increase capacity to the islands, state Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert said Thursday she is expecting a loss of 511,000 tourists _ the number of people ATA was expected to bring to the islands in the remaining nine months of 2008.

That's 7 percent of the 7.3 million people who visited the state last year. Read more
