Feds send funding to Big Island health centers

Bay Clinic in Hilo will get $239,000, while West Hawaii Community Health Center in Kailua-Kona will receive $219,000. The money is classified as Affordable Care Act funding and is intended to help the health centers expand primary care services, federal officials said.

Ocean Thermal Gets a Second Chance

Prospects for generating electricity from the temperature difference in ocean water just got a boost with the installation of a 100 kilowatt turbine in Hawaii. Makai Ocean Engineering put the turbine in place Tuesday at its Kailua-Kona facility, which will be the largest grid-connected facility to use ocean thermal conversion technology after piping and electrical connections are finished as planned by the end of the year.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawaii has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a homeless man who was cited by police for panhandling on the Big Island. The lawsuit filed in federal court in Honolulu on Monday seeks to stop Hawaii County from enforcing a law that the ACLU says unconstitutionally prohibits panhandling.
