Bessemer moves forward with Deep Freeze grants

The city of Bessemer is moving forward with the process of securing state-provided grants of more than $615,000 to help with repairs to damaged infrastructure from last winter's Deep Freeze. The city will need to contribute a local match of more than $108,000 to receive the Community Development Block Grant funding.

City cleans up in sunshine

Vehicles were lined up about 12 deep along Ayer Street Saturday morning as sunshine greeted Ironwood 's annual fall clean-up day. City residents got rid of trash of all sorts in the three-hour collection effort manned by city workers and numerous volunteers who were assisting Eagle Waste and Recycling.

Gogebic County communities to receive over $1 million in aid

Governor Rick Snyder announced Thursday that $7.5 million in state money will be allocated to eligible communities to help with infrastructure cost after last winter's deep freeze. Thirty-two communities in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula have become eligible to receive the funding.

HIT Idol auditions set for early October

Auditions are scheduled for Oct. 3-4 at the Historic Ironwood Theatre, and all young vocalists from throughout the Gogebic Range and northern Wisconsin are invited to audition. Contestants will be placed in three groups for the competition, including youth, high school or young adults, ranging from fifth grade to age 29. Auditions are Oct. 3 from 3-6 p.m ., Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Once the final vocalists are selected, they will perform at the theatre on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. The following evening, Nov. 8, the winners from each category will be announced and will perform their songs as the opening act for American Idol season 10 finalist Naima Adedapo.

Kenny's Studio demolition bid comes in high

The city of Ironwood has received only one bid to demolish the former Kenny's Studio building at 227 E. Aurora St ., next to the Carnegie Library. The city commission will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. in regular session and will consider the bid from Jake's Excavating, of Ironwood , for $75,000.

It is with great sorrow that the board writes to inform your readers that the Charter Township of Ironwood has chosen to terminate library services with the Ironwood Carnegie Library for its residents. In previous years, the township contracted with the Ironwood Carnegie Library for a fee of $16,500.
