Hearing that downtown Iowa City was a possible site for Hancher, I was aghast.... a performing Arts Center in the midst of bars and restaurants? Who would profit from that? Where is the beauty and setting for this jewel?...another parking garage and a cramped common area?
Hancher's present location gives it dignity and a sense of oneness with nature.. In an era where beauty is becoming increasing hard to find,"progress" overcoming fitness of purpose and short sightedness commonplace, let us consider carefully what we do. Take a short walk from downtown to the river, really see, feel and appreciate how "right" this place is for our children, our students and all who come to Hancher. Reconsider relocation of a hallmark of Iowa City. |
