Why don't citizens demand television and radio advance warnings that multiple smaller quakes are happening, i.e., that a larger quake is about to happen somewhere in the region? Don't they want time to gather medicines, pick up needed things and mentally prepare themselves and their homes or workplace? Is everyone afraid, preferring denial? If it was televised, would people go crazy, causing more chaos out of fear? The economy picks up when you need to get supplies. Can't anyone be preventive in this day and age and make life easier on themselves? Look at the URL on this post...it was very obvious a larger quake was coming from the list of seismic activity two and three days before the Lennox quake. Aftershocks usually occur for days afterwards, also. It takes time to pull out such information from the USGS site which does a great job but most people are working each day. They are not catching it. Why aren't television stations or radio stations giving such updates? People with health concerns need to know such things; they are used to preparing ahead for many contingencies. Do it for them if no one else cares.

This is so true. I think the people have the right to know all this things are happening!!! I as a mother of two is very concerned with all this... We as the people need to be prepared for our families and for ourselfs in case of an emergency. If we dont start now then when it does happen its going to be Hell!!! People should be aware of what is happening.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/step/ has forecasts. These things always look "obvious" after the fact when you know where to look, but with hundreds of earthquakes a week all over cali it's virtually impossible to pick anything out from the noise. All you can do is assign probabilities (which is what the map above does).

There is no absoute prediction possible although gatherings of different types of people mingling can 'tip the balance' of seismic activity. Some earthquakes are caused by atmospheric flux; others involve the movements of other species deep within subterranean areas (such as when a condom is flushed -- who can predict that?)[in Stuart, FL]

It's nerve wrecking. We bought our water/food supplies and I am encouraging all our neighbors/friends and others to do so as well. Thing that makes me crazy here is, that people go through all those earthquakes like they were zombies. How come every one thinks that nothing really disastrous can happen.??? It can any moment. The indifference of most people, who in fact are involved, makes me mad. Many don't care to get prepared and it makes me sad to think about what would happen to them and their loved ones, IF a big one hits. I want to urge everyone here in SoCal to please get your water/food supply and all other important things together in a relatively safe place. Also try to work out a survival plan. It really is important. Try to stay safe, than sorry. Blessings and prayers to all out here. Brida

Stockpiling only increases stress hotspots on the ground and increases the chance of earthquakes. You're part of the problem, not the solution.

As far as I'm concerned, YOU and your farts (excuse my English, everyone else), are more likely to trigger another earthquake. Get real, you ignorant person (to say the least)!

Although being prepared is one thing - being terrified the whole time about a mostly unpredictable event is quite another. Moreover, even the largest recent one (Northridge 6.7) killed fewer than 100 people, so even when it DOES hit your chances are extremely good. Stop fretting and enjoy life... or move.

It is such a relief to see that some of you do take it seriously. I disagree with the writer who said the map was just "probability." No, those are actual locations where quakes were recorded.
If the animals can sense tremeors coming, surely we can do so, also, by observing patterns on the USGS seismic Hazard maps.
Praying for you when I hear of news; other areas of the country are having quakes, also, and Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands are getting hit repeatedly with 3.+ quakes frequently now.
This is never intended to cause fear but to help people get out of the denial and apathy and take some action for preparation. Perhaps it is easier for those of us who have studied God's promises, who believe in Him...I do understand that for nonbelievers, death is terrifying to them in whatever form it comes, so they would shy away from monitoring any of this.
Listen, if I can put up with fifteen tornadoes slashing the skies overhead, you guys can put together an emergency backpack and get supplies inside your homes. Smile. Make it "fun" and think of it as playing "hopscotch" over the fault lines.
Stay safe. Just cry aloud to God when it happens, asking Him to direct you which way to go, what to do. I think the confusion is the hardest part of any disaster when it begins; I have been in several disasters. Anything you can do to prepare for survival helps you adapt a bit faster.

P.S. Typo in second paragraph: word should be spelled "tremors."
