Attorney Cheryl U. Lewis of Hyden has been appointed by Gov. Steve Beshear to a six-year term on the Morehead State University Board of Regents.

Gov. Steve Beshear made several appointments yesterday to governing boards at universities, including the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville.

At least one person is trapped inside a burning apartment complex in Hyden. Fire officials tell us at least six fire departments are battling a fire at the Beechwood Apartments, a four-story building.

A Leslie County woman says she was robbed by a stranger as she returned to her Hyden community home.

Early this evening one of Sue and George Gilbert's sons found their stolen truck. It was parked behind Hometown pharmacy beside of the dentist office basically unharmed. The truck has been taken until detectives can finger print the inside and gather other information from it. Sources say that the truck had been parked there for 3 to 4 day, maybe even longer. If anyone has any information about who parked the truck there or if anyone seen anyone around it please contact the Sherrif's office immediately. If we want to put a stop to all of these incidents that happen in our county we are going to have to work together. Please if you have any information help us in solving this.

On Monday February 11, 2007 the home of George and Sue Gilbert was robbed and then set on fire. This family has lost a great deal to this tragedy including a newer model Chevrolet truck maroon in color which was also stollen. Stinnett Fire Departement which the home owner's were members of done a great job responding to this 911 call. They done everything that they could to let the family salvage what little they could. Several items were stollen before the fire including a 42 inch plasma TV, jewelry, guns, and much more. Susan Stone, president and dean of the Frontier School of Midwifery & Family Nursing in Hyden, would like to know the answer to that as well. She said low-risk births -- 80 percent of all births -- don't have to occur in hospitals or with doctors present. Read more

HYDEN, Ky. -- Giant earth-moving equipment groans under tons of rock that has been blasted from a mountainside at the Thunder Ridge mine to expose a seam of coal underneath. via The Courier-Journal

Kentucky State Police have arrested a Leslie County man who is suspected of shooting a man in the arm Saturday.

Wayne Nantz of Leslie County ran into Asher's Mini-Mart on Middle Fork Road in the War Branch community of Leslie County just after 6 p.m. Saturday. Nantz had a gunshot wound to his upper left arm and asked the store clerk to call police.

Nantz was transported to Mary Breckenridge Hospital in Hyden and later moved to Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hazard for treatment.

Kentucky State Police said they learned that Cameron Caldwell, 20, of War Branch, had fired several shots at Nantz. One bullet hit Nantz in the arm. Read more

Tuesday's special election for the 30th state Senate District has, at many times, had more to do with Frankfort than with the four Eastern Kentucky counties it covers.

Both Republican and Democratic leaders in the state Capitol have campaigned ferociously for the candidate of their respective party in the district that covers Perry, Bell, Harlan and Leslie counties.

Conversely, those same Frankfort leaders -- Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo and Republican Senate President David Williams --have become unwilling subjects of pointed advertisements by the opposite parties. Read more
