Gaston County trucker killed in wreck

The Highway Patrol continues to investigate what led up to a wreck Saturday that killed a Gaston County truck driver. Richard Eric Ellis, 57, of 237 Island View Road, Mount Holly, died after the tractor-trailer he was driving veered to the left and struck several trees off Interstate 77 South in Huntersville.

N.C. Woman Impaled by Pole on High School Gate

Sept. 13--A woman was hospitalized in serious condition Friday night after being impaled by a pole from a wind-blown gate as she was driving from a parking lot at Hopewell High School, a Huntersville fire official said. Wind blew the gate shut, and the pole went through the headlight, engine compartment and firewall and into the driver's compartment, Huntersville Fire Department spokesman Bill Suthard said.

McAuley Road bridge opening delayed to Friday

The N.C. Department of Transportation said Thursday that the reopening of the McAuley Road bridge in Huntersville has been pushed back another day. Crews originally were to have finished the renovations earlier this week, and the DOT said Wednesday that the reopening would take place Thursday.

N.C. politicians agree on threat, not timing

Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis and Sen. Kay Hagan on Wednesday agreed with President Barack Obama that the Islamic State poses a grave threat to the United States, but Tillis harshly criticized the president and Hagan for not acting sooner. Sen. Kay Hagan, a Democrat from Greensboro who's in a close race with Tillis, stressed the threat from the Islamic State, also called ISIS or ISIL, and said that "their murder of two American journalists is an attack on America and our values."
