Tying up the batteau. By O.T. Holen The Wednesday lunch crowd at Donna's Place on Valley Street in Scottsville was buzzing with excitement - all other topics took second place to the arrival of the Batteaus on the beautiful James River flowing a few hundred yards from the popular eatery.

More than four years ago, Brian Roberts of Beech Grove was bitten by the batteau bug.

To this day, Gail Timberlake still isn't sure exactly what happened. All she really knows is that one moment she and the rest of The Lady Slipper's crew were poling their batteau down the James River - doing their best to avoid the rocks jutting up from the river bed - and the next moment they were sinking.
