Lions Club gets ready for 40th flea market

The Dublin Lion's Club will host the Fall Pulaski County Flea Market this weekend at the New River Valley Fairgrounds, marking the 40th year the local organization has brought the event to the community. Around 17,000 people from all over Virginia and surrounding states are expected to come and see the items offered by nearly 700 vendors this year.

West to serve as town's interim treasurer

West will handle the duties of that office until a replacement can be found for Judy Bolt, whose resignation as the assistant town manager/treasurer was effective Aug. 19. Bolt, who served with the Town of Hillsville for 25 years, has accepted the position of human resources director with the City of Galax. West will not receive a salary, but will bill the town for the hours actually worked at a rate of 35 per hour.

Va. reservist just back from tour loses house in fire

A Hillsville house owned by an Army reservist just back from Afghanistan was lost to a fire Wednesday, September 3. Fortunately, Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Donnie Spangler said nobody was in the residence. The call came in at approximately 1 p.m. of a possible structure fire at 294 Weddle Street, which is just off Howlett Street.

A malicious intent complaint over a sewer break August 15 in Fancy Gap has an area landowner alleging harassment from County Administrator Gary Larrowe, while Larrowe says he was simply doing his job and looking out for the county's interests. The sewer break occurred on Steve Gregson's property on Frog Spur Road in Fancy Gap.
