Herkimer County Republicans think County Jail project could now move forward with ease

Thats why we voted them in.Finish this jail!

Does anyone know that the present jail is falling apart? There has been little to no maintenance for years. Ceilings are falling down from water leaks, boilers are frying inmates and workers alike, floors are cracking, elevator not working right.....and so much more. That building should be condemned, which I think the state corrections commission has said that it is not inhabitable. What the heck is wrong with these people running Herkimer County government?
People have to take loans to buy a house, so of course the same would apply for a new jail. Aren't there state funds to help the building of a jail? The longer the county drags their feet the more a new jail will cost. Let's get this thing up and moving forward before another 1.2 MILLION is given to other counties for housing Herkimer county inmates!

There has never been proper maintenance there. Lets hope the new jail will! I would hate to see this one fall apart 50 years to early like the other. The 1900 jail is and has lasted longer than the Washington street one.
Actually sounds like the Washington street jail is perfect for inmates.

Can anyone tell me what the plan is for the existing jail, once the new one is built? I have not heard a plan yet and wondered if it will be demo'd or let stand.

Lets hope they do a better job than they did last time around. The only reason it was built where it is now is that some powerful people made a whole lot of money off the sale of the land that it now sits on. And if you think they'll better maintain a new facilty, forget it. They don't adequately fund the College; what makes you think they'll adequately fund something like a jail? It won't be long until they'll be singing the blues and raising our taxes again.

I heard that Oneida County is going to, or has, opened a new wing on their jail. So taxpayer of Herkimer County, there is our new jail, it just happens to be in Oneida County were your money is going to house Herkimer county inmates!!!!

Not that there will be much change following the recent election, but give a phone call to your legislator and tell them that our tax dollars need to stay in Herkimer County. And let's hope they demolish the existing jail which is not fit for humans....inmates or the corrections officers that have to work there.

As for the jail, I saw pics of the blue prints. I think it looks like a retirement home.
They want land big enough to place the jail and the county garage dont forget. P&C site, I dont know!?
