Precious? In America securing a high school degree is a given, at least for normal people who live average lives. To make is appear that a black person getting their degree is something more then expected just goes to show the rest of us that blacks have low expectations when it comes to achieving a simple thing as a high school degree. Obvious president Obozo has to give a few more pep rally speeches to make these blockheads understand that having multiple kids with multiple partners, living off welfare and going in and out of jail isn't going to work in the grand scheme of things. And they wonder why whit.e people have no sympathy in the year 2009 for the selfmade woes of blacks.

There are 225 graduates, but what is the class size? They say 51% graduated last year and this year is probably offering a whopping 52%.
Newsday, why not cover a school graduation where almost all students graduate? Oh, that's right, most school graduations would have to be covered.

I graduated Hempstead in 1965 at the Calderone Theatre on No. Franklin Street. I think my class was the last one that had a majority of white kids in it and things were getting dicey although the graduation rate was well over 90%. Everybody spoke English and there was no special ed or ESL then. And nodbody was breeding, on the dole, or going to jail then. Drugs were a non-issue.

White flight was in full stride at that time and the poor old town has been in the sewer ever since.

and I graduated at the Calderone 1n 1954......it was drummed your head for 4 years that graduation was necessary....(and on to college)..that was over 55 years ago and Hempstead had it's own police force to maintain Law and Order...something went wrong somewhere ,...and my graduation( or yours,I'm sure) didnt rate an article in the newspaper!!!!

I had a friend that worked at a College
not far from Hempstead she told me
that many of the students applying
for College from Hempstead High had
a 8-10th grade reading level, They were totally unprepared.. They could not write a letter, No comprehension
skills. These kids are sent out into the world without much hope..
They lower the standards to get them threw school but leave them without much hope for the future.

And of those that did manage to gradute with the 'dumbed' down standards the state requires will all fit quite well into today's society where laziness is rewarded and it is not politically correct to state that a kid could actually be 'stupid'.

It all comes back to simple parenting where the Mother/Father instill values and the importance of education (at the very least HS). But I imagine when you don't even know who your father is or you are too busy blaming soceity for your lack of upward mobility you end up with the Hempstead Class of 2009

It's unbelievable that you racists have to resort to bashing teenagers. Instead of giving encouraging words to these kids who are getting prepared for the real world you come off as sour grapes. This actually speaks volumes of the low morale and lack of respect as well as lack of self esteem that you have within yourselves. Apparently you weren't properly raised in YOUR own households to learn how to respect others.

Congratulations to the Class of Hempstead H.S. 2009!! Keep climbing the ladder of success!! Life isn't easy but stay on the right path and continue to strive for excellence!!!

It's through, not "threw school." Better check your reading level. Also, it's not just Hempstead. I work in a wealthy, white district and many of those kids can't write a letter or paragraph.

I can remember when Hempstead was one of the best districts on LI. It's a shame what has happened. They can't blame the white man for this. It is of their own doing.

I agree with you totally. Too bad there isn't a politician, school administrator, social activist, etc. who would admit to this truth that you so aptly stated.

Like Balto and Villid, I too graduated from HHS (in 1966). I agree with both. That town is just not the same, and my heart aches whenever I read about its many problems. Good luck to the class of 2009; maybe things will turn around soon.

Unfortunately, for the students of HHS they will continue to be painted with the broad brush of miseducation. People like Stroughn are responsible, his sidekick Williams and do anything Olga..I want for their children and grandchildren just what they gave to the children of Hempstead.......Good riddance Reggie, take Hank, your crew and all your personal issues with you. And, the education system does not need you to consult, you need it to line your pocket. Write a book? LOL....it is widely known....you can't write.

The students who attend school in Hempstead are the victims of mismanagement, cronyism; incompetance and municipal corruption.
