Electric hikes already here

Electricity customers worried about skyrocketing rates when price caps expire starting in 2010 for PPL Corp. and other utilities only have to look at a handful of neighboring communities to see what it's like to deal with hefty increases.

For people who live in Lehighton, Quakertown, Perkasie, Kutztown, Lansdale, Weatherly, Hatfield, Schuylkill Haven and St. Clair -- all of which have municipal-run electric utilities from which they use profits to fund borough operations -- hefty increases are already a fact of life.

The Quakertown Boro rate increase was heavy but well explained. My sister is served by PPL and has received several rate increases in recent years and is told to receive a very large one when deregulation ends. The Boro services are supported by our rates, not a corporate CEO. We appreciate the very low real estate tax in the town. David Zaiser wants to raise it - why? Everyone uses electric, and the big users pay much more. Those whith electric homes pay to heat just like those of us with oil who now are looking at $3.95 a gallon to prepay. We don't need our taxs raised also.

BeccaJu, you have it a little backward. "Big users" may pay more dollars, but small users, like Quakertown homes, pay a higher rate. The more you use, the less you pay per kw. Zaiser tried unsuccessfully to get that reversed, to reward conservation.
